Raspberry Pi can work with an external SSD hard drive without having to use an external power supply.

Requirements

  • Hard Drive Adapter
  • /boot/config.txt Configuration

Hard Drive Adapter

Personally I use the Sabrent USB 3.0 to SSD which costs about £8, but feel free to use whichever one you want.

Configuration

To ensure there's enough power for the hard drive to work, open the file:

/boot/config.txt

And add the following parameter:

max_usb_current=1

Reboot and you are good to go.
